Can each file have its own format and quality?

How much smaller does it get?

Turning a lossless file like WAV into MP3 usually brings it down to a fifth or a tenth. Even an MP3 gets smaller if you lower the bitrate.

How much data each second of audio uses (kbps). Lower means a smaller file and lower quality. For music go 192kbps or above; for speech 96–128kbps is plenty.
